UCLA Lab School Supports Haiti
by Saransh

Picture
In February 2010, the UCLA Lab School decided to donate to the Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund to help the Haitian people in their time of need after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the capital city on January 12.

The UCLA Lab School sent out different members of Rooms 3&4 to talk to classrooms in the school about donating to the fund. They talked about all the agonizing things that were happening in Haiti.

"I think it is great that people are coming together to help Haiti, and if everyone chips in, we can make a difference," claims Lucia, a student of Rooms 3&4.

The students explained to the classrooms that they can help by donating any amount of money in jars that would be spread all over the school for two weeks.

After people donated, the money would be sent to the Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund, and later to the people of Haiti.

There has been much talk about the people hurt in the Haiti Earthquake, but a lot of the animals have been very badly hurt also. Luckily, there are a lot of animal groups that are trying their best to help save the animals that have lost their homes and/or have been very badly injured.

Listed below are some of the animal groups that have taken their time to help these animals in Haiti:

     * World Society for the Protection of Animals
     * Humane Society of the United States
     * Christian Veterinary Mission
     * Heifer International
     * American Veterinary Medical Foundation

 An Interview with Stan from Stan's Donuts

Anyone who knows me knows I love Stan's Donuts, so I just had to interview the man who started it all. Stan Berman, owner of Stan's Donuts, let me interview him. Stan's Donuts is located in the heart of Westwood Village, Los Angeles. It has been around since 1965.

Claudia: Is there anything new about Stan's Donuts?
Stan: Not really. The donut shop has been using the same system for the past years. We are waiting for a new donut, but so far we are still looking for a new donut. Somebody suggested a maple bar, a donut with turkey bacon and maple syrup. We are still not sure.

Claudia: What are the top five donuts most liked by the public?
Stan: #1 glazed donut #2 mariska donut #3 peanut butter with chocolate donut # 4 twist donut #5 blueberry old-fashioned donut.

Claudia: Are there any other Stan's Donuts locations?
Stan: My son owns one in Thousand Oaks.

Claudia: Is Stan's Donuts open 24 hours?
Stan: Stan's Donuts is open from 6:00 a.m.  to 12:00 p.m. night time.

Claudia: Does Stan's Donuts have holiday donuts?
Stan: Yes, we have holiday donuts (including Hanukkah).

Claudia: How many years has Stan's Donuts been open?
Stan: We opened in 1963- we have been open 46 years.

Claudia: Does Stan's Donuts feel the crisis?
Stan: Not really. Most people come and buy a donut whole and it seems to perk up their attitude. I call it "smile food."

Hairspray Coming to Lab School

Picture
by Claudia

On Friday June 4, 2010, UCLA Lab School students will perform the musical Hairspray in Community Hall at the UCLA Lab School.

The inspiration for doing Hairspray was that Hairspray is one of Amanda Baird's (the director) favorite shows, and she loves the music in it.

Hairspray is about the injustices of segregation in the 1960's and a girl (Tracy Turnblad) with a dream to be on the Corny Collins Show, which was based on the real  "Buddy Deane Show."

There will be no seat saving at the show. The student version will play on June 3, 2010.
