Review of The Color Purple
by Lucia

In February, I went to see a musical at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood called The Color Purple. It was based on a novel by Alice Walker, and later, a movie of the same name. In 2005, the show opened on Broadway and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2006.

As I walked into the beautiful Pantages Theatre, I was excited and happily anticipating the start of the show. From the first line, I knew that I was in for a treat.

The Color Purple is set in Georgia in 1909, when Celie (Fantasia Barrino) and her sister Nettie (LaToya London) are playing a hand game. Celie is fourteen years old, and Nettie is a few years younger.

A few years later, Celie is married to a man so she can help him take care of his children. But the man (Celie calls him "Mister") is abusive towards Celie, and when Nettie comes to visit her, Mister makes her run away. Celie believes Nettie to be dead.

Years later, Celie befriends Shug Avery (Angela Robinson), a singer who is staying at Mister's home.

The show was put on wonderfully, with simple but beautiful sets, great music, and a fantastic cast.

The stars of the show included Fantasia Barrino as "Celie." She was a passionate and charismatic actress, and even more impressive than her acting was her American Idol-winning voice. She was truly a star.

The show also included Felicia P. Fields, who was reprising the role of "Sofia" from her Tony-nominated performance in the original Broadway cast. She was an amazing actress, with a great voice and an excellent sense of comic timing.

LaToya London played "Nettie". Her acting was perfect; you could really believe that she was Nettie, and her voice was sweet and pure.

The cast also included Stu James as "Harpo" and Tiffany Daniels as "Squeak," both of whom were marvelous.
