Interview With Director of Lab School's Peter Pan
by Lucia

Peter Pan has been chosen as the Spring 2010 UCLA Lab School Kindergarten through Third Grade school musical.  Amanda Baird, the director of the show, allowed an interview.

Interview with Director:

Lucia: What other shows have you directed?
Amanda: Right now, I'm directing West Side Story, Grease, High School Musical, Hairspray, Sound of Music, and Wizard of Oz.

Lucia: What is your favorite thing about directing shows?
Amanda: I like it all. I mean, it's like getting to play for a living. I get to dance and sing every day! But I don't like casting.

Lucia: Do you have any interest in acting in shows? If so, what shows have you acted in?
Amanda: Oh, I've acted in a lot of shows. I've been Evita in Evita, Maria in West Side Story, Kate in Taming of the Shrew... but my favorite is directing. I've been doing it for 13 years and that's really what I love to do.

Lucia: Can you tell us anything about your version of Peter Pan?
Amanda: I tried to include more kids, because in the first part of the show it's really only Peter and Wendy. And so many kids were really excited about it, so I had to work out more parts. I'm also blending stories, but you'll have to wait and see.

Lucia: Will you be directing any other shows that you would like to bring to our readers' attention?
Amanda: Yes! I am doing a bunch of shows over the summer, and you're all welcome to join.

Background Information:

Peter Pan opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1954. It starred Mary Martin in the title role, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Since then, the show has had two revivals in 1979 and 1990, both of which were nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

The UCLA Lab School production will open at Community Hall on June 10, 2010, with one preview. It will star Paula S. as Peter, Alexandra B. as Wendy, and Maxine Z. as Captain Hook.
